Contentment with what God has already given
Here are the principles of how to make the most of what God has given your church:
[1. Start with what you already have]
» 2. Do the fundamental things well
Start with what you already have
The idea of contentment means you don’t actually need any more that what you’ve got now. It might be nice to have some more instruments and a decent sound system, and if blessings come your way, accept them with thanks to God! But let’s start with what you already have.
Often we have a lot more than we’re aware: church members with hidden talents; a set of decent speakers sitting in someone’s basement; someone who writes great original music and just needs a bit of encouragement. How do we find out about all of this? Use a questionnaire.
Each year at church we make a general call inviting people to serve on the music or sound team. Everyone who registers their interest receives a questionnaire asking for details such as previous experience and training, and what additional areas of training they would like. It’s also a great way to find gear people have hidden away somewhere.
A questionnaire you might like to use is available here.
Collect the questionnaires and use them to organise appropriate rosters. By appropriate I mean matching the level of difficulty of songs you chose with the abilities of the musicians you have, matching inexperienced people with experienced people, and making sure you can borrow enough gear for what you plan to do each week. The next section Do the fundamental things well contains more detailed information on organizing a music team.
