Scripture references for “Till Your Time”
A few people have requested Scripture references for some of the ideas in “Till Your Time” - happy to oblige!
VERSE 1
Before the waters saw the sun,
Before my story had begun,
I was known within your mind,
In your heart.
Verse 1 reflects on the awesome reality that God knew us, loved us and chose us in Christ even before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4). The imagery is taken from the opening verses of Genesis 1, when the dark waters had not yet seen the sun, or heard the words, “Let there be light.”
VERSE 2
You spoke a word to make me whole,
Your Spirit moved within my soul,
Light was poured upon my eyes
Till the time when your name I cried.
Verse 2 describes the conversion experience from a spiritual point of view. God’s initiative through the powerful work of his Spirit (Ezekiel 36:26-28 & Titus 3:4-5) causes light to shine in our hearts to know the face of Jesus Christ (1Corinthians 4:6).
CHORUS
So I shout it to the sky:
The name of Jesus Christ!
Lord, for you died that I could be
A voice to bring you glory,
Till your Time.
The Chorus is a parallel of Psalm 71:23-24, where David shouts God’s praises for the redemption he’d received. The phrase “Till Your Time” is a commitment to glorifying Jesus till the day he returns (see notes on the Bridge).
VERSE 3
Till the dawning of your Day
We’ll call the earth to know your name,
Lighting hearts to burn inside
Till the time when the earth replies.
Verse 3 is a continued outworking of the content of the Chorus; to glorify Jesus with our voices includes a fulfilling of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). As we open the Scriptures and people come to know Jesus by the power of his Word and Spirit, hearts will burn inside (Luke 24:32). “The time when the earth replies” looks forward to the day when every tongue will respond to the name of Jesus by confessing that he is Lord (Philippians 2:11).
BRIDGE
Till the Time,
When the morning star
Rises up
Bright within our hearts –Till the Time,
When the night gives way
And your light
Fills the dawning DayTill the Time –
The words of the Bridge come from 1 Peter 1:19, where the apostle encourages us to rely on God’s word as a light shining in the darkness, until the morning star rises in our hearts (an allusion to the return of Jesus Christ at the dawn of the New Creation). In Revelation 22:16, Jesus identifies himself with the title “Bright Morning Star”.
The song as a whole is really a response to all God has done for us from the beginning of time. So I hope it will encourage God’s people to continue proclaiming the great name of Jesus till the day he comes again!
